Our Story

How We Got Started

Hidmonna was founded in 2009 with the primary goal of raising awareness of the grave human rights situation in Eritrea, to advocate for human rights, and to counter the Eritrean regime’s transnational repression of Eritrean-Canadians.

Upon its founding, Hidmonna proactively campaigned to raise awareness of the Eritrean regime’s 2% tax diaspora taxes. In 2013, the Government of Canada outlawed the collection of the 2% tax by the Eritrean regime in Canada, and expelled the head of the Consulate General of Eritrea in Toronto.

What we do today

In the last decade, the human rights situation in Eritrea has detoriarated. Hidmonna continues to advocate for Eritrean refugees, raise awareness of the grave  human rights situation in Eritrea, and counter the Eritrean regime’s repressive activities in Canada.
